R B “Jack” Turney was born in Blacksburg, South Carolina, March 8, 1923, to Julian Mack and Lottie Mae Turney – and went home to be with His Lord at the age of 91 on September 15, 2014. He was the last survivor of five children; one sister, Lola Mae, and three brothers – Richard (Pete), Garland (Bill) and Julian (Buck).
In 1947 he married Ruby Bridges Turney who passed away in 2009. Jack is survived by his three children, James, Thomas and Marilyn; two granddaughters, Amber and Aurora and two great granddaughters.
Jack obtained an associate degree from what is now known as Spartanburg Junior College while working at the Belk-Hudson Department Store.
On March 17, 1943, Jack heard Dr. B.R. Lakin’s radio broadcast from the Cadle Tabernacle in Indianapolis and accepted the Lord as his personal Savior (and threw away 6 packs of cigarettes and never smoked again!)
That same year Jack was inducted into the U.S. Army, serving in three combat zones, Battle of the Bulge, Battle of Central Europe and Battle of the Rhine during WWII. He volunteered to remain in Germany one year after the war as well as assistant to the Chaplain, leaving with the rank of Staff Sgt.
Jack returned to North Carolina to accept a civil service position with the Marine Corp at Camp Lejeune, NC, where he and Ruby organized and directed Youth For Christ rallies and tent revivals.
Jack switched to civil service jobs for the Air Force in 1955 and followed his assignments with his family to Greenville SC, Cheyenne WY and Waco TX in a short period of 5 years, finally settling in Hampton VA from 1960 to 1969 at Tactical Air Command HQ supply operations.
In 1969, Jack left his Civil Service career with a proud GS-12 rating after 27 years of service and moved to Orlando, FL to work briefly in the corporate headquarters of Koscot and Dare To Be Great.
Throughout most of his adult life, Jack was honored to serve on the Board of Directors of Trans World Radio (international missionary radio broadcasting) for almost 50 years. In the 1960s, he and his wife shepherded many TWR missionaries through obtaining their first financial support tours and following furoughs as well as making hundreds of presentations to ask churches across the country to support TWR directly.
In 1971 the Lord led Jack to establish Christian Duplications International, introducing innovative audio tape recording and duplication technology to thousands of evangelists, churches and ministries that allowed their message to reach a wider audience. Jack was also inspired to produce the first audio Bible in English & Spanish on cassette.
By 1980, Christian Duplications grew to become the dominant supplier of media services and supplies to Christian ministries with a staff of 49 and a national presence.
In 1985, Jack founded The Spoken Word of God, which became the heart of his Christian ministry; a non-profit organization dedicated to broadcasting the Bible around the world in over 20 languages, producing and distributing the Bible on audio cassette, CDs, MP3 and Solar-powered units.
Jack loved to visit churches, ministries and Christian events across the nation in his wife Ruby in their twin-engine private plane which made them, Christian Duplications and Spoken Word of God fixtures in the American Christian community.
But Jack was also a fixture of the Christian community of India, travelling there for the Spoken Word of God to build scores of churches, two Bible colleges, pastor training events as well as medical clinics and an orphanage – winning tens of thousands to the Lord Jesus in India. In addition to India, through the ministry of the Spoken Word of God, Jack established and aided in missionary work in Russia and the Ukraine.
Jack knew India was far too big for one man or ministry to conquer so he encouraged and mentored others to take up similar successful church building ministries in India. As a result, thousands of churches have been built there by Dois Rosser founding ICM, David Stepp founding Living Waters Ministries and Charles McGalliard founding Rural Church Building Project; all of whom built their first churches with Jack at Spoken Word of God.
For the past 15 years, Jack had devoted his life solely to the work of the Spoken Word of God ministry. God has blessed R B “Jack” Turney beyond measure with a long life of fruitful service to the Lord Jesus – a true “soldier of the Cross” and living testimony ‘til the very end – even among his “angel caregivers” in the hospital and at home. He will be deeply missed by his family, his co-workers, and preachers and friends around the world.
